Menorrhagia
or heavy periods is characterised heavy bleeding or flow during
periods. Finding the rate of bleeding and ascertaining if it is
normal or heavy, is a difficult task given that it cannot be
measured.
Signs
of menorrhagia
The
signs depicting the need of treatment for heavy periods are as
follows: -
- Periods lasting for more than 7 days
- Severe bleeding warranting pad change every 2 hours
- Painful menstrual periods
- Bleeding clots with more than 1 inch in diameter
Heavy
bleeding is common during the menopausal stage or after skipping of a
period.
Causes
of menorrhagia
The
cause of menorrhagia or heavy periods can be attributed to the
fluctuations in the level of hormones. Hormones like estrogen and
progesterone helps in maintaining the menstrual cycle and thickening
of uterine walls. Hormonal imbalances during teenage and menopausal
period can thus lead to menorrhagia.
Menorrhagia
can be caused due to blood clotting irregularities as well. Other
causes include fibroids in uterus, uterine cancer, endometrial
polyps, increased stress, weight fluctuations, pregnancy related
irregularities and infections in reproductive organs.
The
treatment for heavy periods is decided based on the causal factor.
The treatment procedure involves medications and other medical
procedures.
- Medications
The
treatment of heavy periods in women and girls within the reproductive
age includes medications. Medicines like NSAIDs (Non Steroidal
Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) helps in lightening the period flow and
reducing the pain associated with it. Hormonal therapy helps in
restoring the hormone balance in cases where heavy periods are caused
due to fluctuations in hormone levels.
- Medical procedures
The
medical procedures are done with the goal of removing the endometrial
lining which causes the bleeding. This is done with the help of
procedures like ablation or dilation and curettage. In cases where
severe bleeding associated with menopause, that cannot be controlled
by other procedure, hysterectomy is done.
