Causes of menorrhagia
The cause of menorrhagia or heavy periods can be attributed to the fluctuations in the level of hormones. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone helps in maintaining the menstrual cycle and thickening of uterine walls. Hormonal imbalances during teenage and menopausal period can thus lead to menorrhagia.
Menorrhagia can be caused due to blood clotting irregularities as well. Other causes include fibroids in uterus, uterine cancer, endometrial polyps, increased stress, weight fluctuations, pregnancy related irregularities and infections in reproductive organs.
The treatment for heavy periods is decided based on the causal factor. The treatment procedure involves medications and other medical procedures.
  • Medications
The treatment of heavy periods in women and girls within the reproductive age includes medications. Medicines like NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) helps in lightening the period flow and reducing the pain associated with it. Hormonal therapy helps in restoring the hormone balance in cases where heavy periods are caused due to fluctuations in hormone levels.
  • Medical procedures
The medical procedures are done with the goal of removing the endometrial lining which causes the bleeding. This is done with the help of procedures like ablation or dilation and curettage. In cases where severe bleeding associated with menopause, that cannot be controlled by other procedure, hysterectomy is done.
NyleWomen’s and Children’s Super Specialty Hospital, based in Thrissur, Kerala, offers highly advanced treatment in various fields of medicine like neonatology, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and so on.

Need for Laparoscopy
Diagnosis:
Are you often disturbed by the pain in the abdominal or pelvic areas of your body? The imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scan or MRI scan failing to diagnose the sources for the pain?  This is when Laparoscopy, also known as diagnostic laparoscopy, comes into use. It is a surgical diagnostic procedure that is used to examine the organs inside the abdomen, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.. Being a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure it is opted by everyone for a closer examination of their abdomen.
The most common cause of blocked fallopian tubes is pelvic inflammatory disease known as PID.  The other likely causes of blocked fallopian tubes include STD infection, specifically Chlamydia or Gonorrhea, or due to uterine infection caused by an abortion or miscarriage.

Treatment:
Laparoscopy surgery uses a thin, lighted tube put through a small cut or incision in the belly area to look at the abdominal organs or the female pelvic organs.  It can also be used to take tissue samples for biopsy through the tube attached to the laparoscope.
Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure useful for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, pelvic pain during menstruation, fibrous tissues developing in the wall of uterus, blocked fallopian tubes and ovarian cyst. Laparoscopy allows the surgeon to directly view the uterus, tubes, ovaries, other organs and the pelvic cavity in general for detailed inspection and diagnosis. The procedure can take around 20 minutes to 2 hours. This depends upon how much operative or corrective work is required on the patient and hence can differ for each individual based on their health condition. A complicated case could take up to 4 hours or more.
The woman is normally discharged from the hospital soon after completion of the surgery but will need to take off from work for an additional 1-2 days following the procedure. There will be mild to moderate pain that can last up to 7 days or so after the procedure.
With a laparoscope, the surgeon can also fix problems in gallbladder, liver, small and large bowel, pancreas, liver, stomach and spleen.
It is also important to watch for any signs of infection post surgery . Contact your doctor if you experience intense stomach ache, chills, fever, inability to urinate, lightheadedness, shortness of breath and persistent cough.

Endometriosis Treatment Kerala

Motherhood is divine. To yearn for it without success is depressing. Endometriosis, one of the common reasons for infertility in women, is a disorder affecting the female reproductive system. Women having this disorder often experience severe pain in the lower abdominal and pelvic areas, mostly during periods. This pain elevates and continues beyond the cycle. In some cases, they are accompanied by pain during urination and bowel movement.

Endometriosis is said to occur when the tissues, also called uterine walls, that are found inside the uterus starts to grow outside it. They cover the fallopian tube, pelvic region and ovaries in most cases. The walls also known as endometrial tissues acts as normal wall linings, thickening, breaking up and bleeding. Since an exit is absent, it flows back and sticks on to the organs in the pelvic area effectively sticking them together thereby hampering fertility.
